Dr. Donahoe’s academic interests are in reproductive developmental biology and oncology, and lung development and its relationship to pulmonary birth defects. Dr. Donahoe’s career encompasses both pediatric surgery and basic research. Begun in her surgical fellowship, her ongoing research on Mullerian Inhibiting Substance (MIS), a rare protein, has important implications for reproduction in both the male and the female, and clinical applications in the regulation of normal reproduction and potentially in the control of ovarian and other reproductive tumors. Her research has also contributed to the understanding of the molecular and genetic causes of birth defects, particularly congenital diaphragmatic hernia which adversely affects lung development. These findings may also influence the hypoplasia associated with prematurity. She has made mentoring a very important part of her contribution to the academic community. Dr. Donahoe is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Medicine. For her continued contributions to research, Dr. Donahoe was recently honored as the American College of Surgeon’s 2021 Jacobson Innovation Award Recipient.
