Thoru Pederson received his undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Zoology from Syracuse University, followed by postdoctoral training in Cell Biology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then joined the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Shrewsbury, MA as staff scientist, rising to senior and principal scientist and then President and Scientific Director. He subsequently led a merger of the Foundation with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he is now the Arnett Professor of Cell Biology, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology and Associate Vice Provost for Research. He works on the functional organization of the nucleus, with emphasis on RNA biosynthesis and genome architecture. He is a member of several societies in his fields, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the recipient of other awards and honors. He is Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal and monthly editorialist in that forum. Beyond the guild, he has been devoted to communicating science to the public throughout his career and continues this.
